The Swing Pong table is a radical take on ping pong. The table tilts at the whim of the referee, the net moves across the table based on the score as to give the losing player an advantage, and photo flashes blind the players through the table.

In this video, professional Table Tennis Player, Adam Bobrow, comes give it a whirl and says it’s “the craziest trippiest table I’ve ever played on and I’ve just got back from travelling the world, playing – so that says a lot!”

Kudos to Robb Godshaw, Hoon Oh and Jisu Choi who built the table as one of their first projects as Syynerns!

The Cryoscope

Syyner Robb Godshaw gets written up in Wired UK for his latest creation: a haptic cube that ‘displays’ tomorrow’s temperature:

“The cube, which Godshaw has named the Cryoscope, consists of an aluminium shell surrounding a Peltier element, heatsink, cooling fan and an LED, all controlled by an Arduino. The cube is heated to a “neutral” state of 30C, and then adjusted by the number of degrees that the next day’s forecast differs from room temperature (23C).”

UPDATE: Kudos on the writeup in Gizmodo!

Robb Godshaw, Hoon Oh and Jisu Choi built this fantastic take on Ping Pong when they were Syynterns in the summer of 2011. Robb, now a full-time Syyner, describes it this way: “The Swing Pong table consists of a pneumatically actuated tilting table which is controlled by remotes held by each player. The players are able to rapidly tilt the table to attempt to throw off their opponent. The remote also controls the score, which determines the location of the net. When a player scores, the motorized net moves further away to inhibit further scoring. This is a method of reducing the advantage of a more skilled player. There are also two remote controlled high-power camera flashes under the surface of the table which the players use to temporarily blind one another. The version in the video has a static net, wired remotes, and manual score keeping.”

This social game project from Syyn Labs is exhibited regularly at Mindshare LA.

Contours

Contours

Created by: Pehr Hovey

Contours is an interactive projection which translates complex motions into simple outline shapes and forms. As the user approaches a mysterious black obelisk in the center of the room (housing the technical components), it senses their movement and renders an avatar on the wall with a brilliant green laser. Participants will naturally begin to make larger gestures with their bodies for the elegant reward of watching the laser impersonate their every move.

Sensate Bear

Sensate Bear on display at Mindshare

Sensate Bear

Created by: Heather Knight

In a lifetime, few possessions garner positive emotional connections like a Teddy bear. The Sensate Bear is equipped with a full set of capacitive-touch sensors capable of detecting human touch gestures. A screen visualization shows us how the bear can distinguish between gestures like: tickling, head-pats, foot rubs and hugs. The bear passively gathers this information and inspires further discovery of methods to communicate, educate, and motivate people in ways that anyone (at any age) can understand.
