What is Syyn Labs? They’re a radical, creative collective based in downtown Los Angeles comprised of physicists, engineers, circus performers, a tall ship captain and a molecular chef. Together, they create impressive art, commercials and even a curriculum for schools. Most likely, you’ve seen something on T.V. that Syyn Labs has created.”
CNN REPORTS: “CNN’s “The Next List” recently took a trip to Syyn Labs in Los Angeles. It’s a creative and technological collective that we will feature on our weekly show, which airs on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. While we were there, we met Dan Busby, a physicist, artist and tinkerer – who also turned a Triumph Spitfire into an electric car.
We had a quick chat with Busby about his homemade “Electric Triumph.” You can see a video of him showing it off above. Below is an edited transcript of our conversation. And don’t forget to check Syyn Labs out on CNN this Sunday at 11am PT.”
We’re excited for this Sunday’s “The Next List” episode!
CNN reports: “You’ll never meet another group of people like the folks at Syyn Labs. They’re an interactive art collective with an edge. They are self-described geeks and nerds and call themselves a drinking group with an art problem. Together, they create extraordinary art, commercials and videos that look practically impossible to execute. Cars bungee jumping off shipping containers an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine set to music created by an organ made entirely from cars.
What’s especially unique about Syyn Labs is this: its people. They’ve got a fire-eating roboticist, a few physicists, a molecular chef, a heavy machine operator who is also their resident pirate, programmers and builders of all kinds. And most of the members of Syyn Labs have a flair for the dramatic. They’re circus performers, musicians, fire dancers and ukulele players. It’s this unique combination of eclectic innovators that earns Syyn Labs a spot on “The Next List” this week.”
Watch CNN at 11am PT on Sunday to see the full 30-minute profile of Syyn Labs.
Proud teacher Heather Cook says: “Wanted to share a little Rube Goldberg love with you from a 1st grader at my school. After watching your video for This Too Shall Pass, he was inspired to make his own Rube Goldberg machine and this little video with an OK GO soundtrack.” Thanks to Audri for his Rube Goldberg Monster Trap!
The Swing Pong table is a radical take on ping pong. The table tilts at the whim of the referee, the net moves across the table based on the score as to give the losing player an advantage, and photo flashes blind the players through the table.
In this video, professional Table Tennis Player, Adam Bobrow, comes give it a whirl and says it’s “the craziest trippiest table I’ve ever played on and I’ve just got back from travelling the world, playing – so that says a lot!”
As if simply DOING the Chevy Sonic “Bungee” stunt (while streaming it LIVE to the Internet!) wasn’t reward enough (case study video), the team here at Syyn Labs has the honor of having a spot with video of the stunt air during this year’s Super Bowl!
Watch for it during the second quarter!
Congrats to all of the Syyners and friends who helped make this possible – especially Davis Galligan, David Mesloh, Matt Samsel, Dan Busby, Hector Alvarez, Mike Russek, Will Reeve, Gilles d’Amecourt, Kenny Abney, Chris Stockton, and Sam Leventer.
And check out the use of the OK Go Rube Goldberg Machine video in another Chevy Superbowl spot!
Thanks Chevy and OK Go!! We love you, too!
FROM CNN: (See article here…)
“Everyone knows the host of CNN’s The Next List, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, is a multi-talented individual. He’s a neurosurgeon, a television show host, an author and scuba diver. But now you can pencil in ‘fire eater.’ Yes, you read it correctly, fire eater.
Out in L.A. filming a profile on the highly creative artist collective Syyn Labs Dr. Gupta had the opportunity of sampling a fiery feast presented to him by Eric Gradman, a lead engineer. Hardly a stranger to extreme challenges Dr. Gupta took to fire eating like an pro, extinguishing the flames in a single gulp.
Stay tuned to CNN’s The Next List, airing Sundays at 2 P.M. E.T. on CNN, to see more with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. And coming soon we’ll have an extraordinary show on the eclectic bunch who make up Syyn Labs.”
