Syyn Labs is delighted to have been commissioned to install a new interactive piece at the Santa Monica GLOW Festival on Sept. 25th, 2010. This is a quick introductory film. It’s a 100-foot-long LED sculpture of 512 computer controlled full-color LED lights suspended from the trellice just south of the Casa Del Mar hotel (map). It goes on display at twilight and wil run continuously until 3am, but get there early. They’re expecting quite a crowd!

Special thanks to Hector Alvarez and David Guttman for putting this film together, and the whole team for working so hard getting this project together.

Disney XD RGM

Syyn Labs and Riverstreet Productions partnered to produce a station ID for Disney XD. Syyn Labs built the 15 second machine using all kinds of materials found in a typical teenage boy’s world – bed, alarm clock, skateboard, balls of all kinds, a drum and pedal, bike, a baseball glove, and… well, we took a little license including the paint canons. The paint fired against a wall knocked out the XD revealing a view of the green colored wall behind. The vibration of the paint hitting the wall knocked the Disney logo loose which then falls into place on hinges. The result is just gorgeous.

Stephen Colbert wanted a Rube Goldberg machine to open his show, so he tapped the creatives at Syyn Labs.

Syyn Labs team member Brett Doar designed and built a beautiful machine for this purpose, incorporating numerous Colbert themed elements. Because it was built in Los Angeles, but the show tapes in New York, the machine had to be then packed, shipped, and reassembled on-site. Reassembly had to take place inside a very narrow time-frame, and the reliability had to be very high as the show is live to tape. The machine worked flawlessly.

Contours

Created by: Pehr Hovey

Contours is an interactive projection which translates complex motions into simple outline shapes and forms. As the user approaches a mysterious black obelisk in the center of the room (housing the technical components), it senses their movement and renders an avatar on the wall with a brilliant green laser. Participants will naturally begin to make larger gestures with their bodies for the elegant reward of watching the laser impersonate their every move.

When the rock band OK Go, famous for their viral videos including the spectacular and award winning “treadmills video“, wanted to feature a 4-minute long Rube Goldberg Machine in an upcoming video, they tapped Syyn Labs to build it.

The requirements were that it had to be interesting, not “overbuilt” or too technology-heavy, and easy to follow. The machine also had to be built on a shoestring budget, synchronize with beats and lyrics in the music and end on time over a 3.5 minute song, play a part of the song, and be filmed in one shot. To make things more challenging still, the space chosen was divided into two floors and the machine would use both.

We had our work cut out for us; every facet of Syyn Labs’ expertise was required to meet this tremendous challenge. See the results of this remarkable effort in the video embedded above.
