What is Syyn Labs? They’re a radical, creative collective based in downtown Los Angeles comprised of physicists, engineers, circus performers, a tall ship captain and a molecular chef. Together, they create impressive art, commercials and even a curriculum for schools. Most likely, you’ve seen something on T.V. that Syyn Labs has created.”

Editor’s Note: Doug Campbell is the founder of Syyn Labs, a radical, creative collective based in downtown Los Angeles. Be sure to check out CNN The Next List’s profile on Syyn Labs this Sunday at 2pm
By Doug Campbell, Special to CNN
“Would they be cool with us launching a rubber chicken into Space?”
A group of excitable characters are volleying ideas around in a gritty but colorfully decorated warehouse. A disco-starfish stands sentry next to a bear wearing a fez. A giant banana and a stuffed monkey hang from the ceiling. A conversation is underway.
“We can do it with fluid dynamics, by tinting layers of oils as they react to the data.”
“Thermal imaging should give us an accurate read of the audiences facial temperatures…”
“Either way, we should use robots… and the paint cannon.”
The brainstorming session resembles a dream in which Salvador Dali is teaching a class at the MIT Media Lab and everyone has ADHD. But this is real. And this is work. And this happens almost every day here at Syyn Labs.

CNN REPORTS: “CNN’s “The Next List” recently took a trip to Syyn Labs in Los Angeles. It’s a creative and technological collective that we will feature on our weekly show, which airs on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. While we were there, we met Dan Busby, a physicist, artist and tinkerer – who also turned a Triumph Spitfire into an electric car.
We had a quick chat with Busby about his homemade “Electric Triumph.” You can see a video of him showing it off above. Below is an edited transcript of our conversation. And don’t forget to check Syyn Labs out on CNN this Sunday at 11am PT.”

Do you follow us on Twitter yet? If not, you should – and then you will be able to wow your friends with awesomeness. Take for example, Robot Quadrotors. They are cutting edge flying machines, that will one day watch you and supress you when you are deemed a threat to civil order. But for now they do awesome stuff like fly in formation and perform James Bond theme like a tiny, autonomous orchestra!
“These flying quadrotors are completely autonomous, meaning humans are not controlling them; rather they are controlled by a computer programed with instructions to play the instruments. Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science is home to some of the most innovative robotics research on the planet, much of it coming out of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab.”

We’re excited for this Sunday’s “The Next List” episode!
CNN reports: “You’ll never meet another group of people like the folks at Syyn Labs. They’re an interactive art collective with an edge. They are self-described geeks and nerds and call themselves a drinking group with an art problem. Together, they create extraordinary art, commercials and videos that look practically impossible to execute. Cars bungee jumping off shipping containers an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine set to music created by an organ made entirely from cars.
What’s especially unique about Syyn Labs is this: its people. They’ve got a fire-eating roboticist, a few physicists, a molecular chef, a heavy machine operator who is also their resident pirate, programmers and builders of all kinds. And most of the members of Syyn Labs have a flair for the dramatic. They’re circus performers, musicians, fire dancers and ukulele players. It’s this unique combination of eclectic innovators that earns Syyn Labs a spot on “The Next List” this week.”
Watch CNN at 11am PT on Sunday to see the full 30-minute profile of Syyn Labs.
